EuPC’s second Food Contact Plastics Seminar - a continuous success, EU industry experts debate about the implementation of regulation.

On 17 – 18 April EuPC held its second event on Food Contact Regulation in Brussels.

The event was attended by almost 90 representatives from all over the plastics food packaging value chain including the sponsor of the event - Clariant.

The participants were presented on the first day with the insights on the Implementation and Control of Food Contact Regulation in Member States; presentations were given by authorities from Public Health, Food Administration and Consumer Affairs Departments, coming from Belgium, France, Netherlands and Spain.

The second day was focused on the practical approach to the regulatory compliance and was followed by a compelling and animated Q&A session where 25 questions were discussed in depth by the panel of experts: Dr Annette Schäfer (from the European Commission, DG Health & Consumers - SANCO), Dario Dainelli (Director Regulatory Affairs Europe/Asia-Pacific, Food & Beverage BU), Dr Calude Dequatre (Toxicology and Regulations Coordinator, Ineos).

The focus of the debate was the exchange of information along the supply chain, new migration testing requirements and future regulatory development. Annette Schäfer mentioned that the Commission is working on a guidance document on the declaration of compliance which is expected this year. She also invited industry to provide data and examples on the application of EU and national legislation as they exist today, that will allow the Commission to solidly assess the impact of the legislation and set future priorities for an improved consumer safety and level playing field.

With the success of this year’s conference and with the fast pace of change in regulations, EuPC is looking forward to organizing next year a third conference on food contact and keeping the interested parties updated with the latest advancements within the Food Contact legislation.
